It is a disturbance of emotions characterized by constant
feelings of sadness, loss, helplessness and impotence.
Depression is characterized by severe and persistent sadness,
which ends up interfering with personal and social functioning
and reducing the interest or pleasure that the person has in
their activities.
Depression causes problems such as: difficulty concentrating,
fatigue, loss of sexual desire, loss of interest or pleasure
in practically all activities that were previously enjoyed,
sleep disturbances.
The following are characteristics of depression:
• Sadness for most of the day;
• Significant weight gain or loss (excessive decrease or
increase in appetite);
• Insomnia;
• Excessive sleep and desire to sleep;
• Fatigue and loss of energy;
• Feelings of worthlessness and excessive guilt;
• Reduced ability to concentrate and make decisions;
• Repetitive morbid thoughts.
